Federal agents have been searching the home of Brian Cole Jr. in Virginia, who is implicated in setting off a pipe bomb in Washington on January 5, 2021. This recent investigation signals a renewed effort into a case that hasn’t seen much progress in a while.
Cole’s arrest in Woodbridge, Virginia, last week marked a significant development. He’s identified as the individual who planted pipe bombs near the Capitol, the Republican National Committee, and the Democratic National Committee on that same date. It’s the first major breakthrough in this largely inactive case.
Jason Pack, a former FBI Special Agent who once led the Evidence Response Team, explained that the search followed standard protocols for explosives investigations. The methodical pace indicates that investigators are treating the situation as if it’s unfolding for the first time.
The operation kicked off with a security sweep, which is typical in federal explosives inquiries. Pack mentioned, “The examination of the Woodbridge residence is thorough and follows established safety practices to ensure the area is secure before evidence collection can begin.”
Interestingly, during the investigation, specific chemicals from metal paint cans were removed from the residence. Pack noted these cans are often favored for transporting explosive materials because they help reduce contamination and preserve volatile samples. They allow forensic teams to analyze residues and trace connections to suspects or methods.
Once the area is deemed secure, the evidence team can begin their work inside the house, guided by search warrants detailing what can be taken.
Pack emphasized that the current focus is on gathering evidence to determine the suspect’s intent and capabilities related to the explosives planted back in January 2021. Investigators are seeking various items, including explosive ingredients, tools for device construction, electronic devices, and documentation that could point to planning and motives.
After collecting the evidence, the investigation moves into a lengthy phase of analysis. Pack believes the FBI’s renewed focus could significantly change the case’s trajectory. He views the situation as an opportunity to approach the investigation afresh, asking new questions that might reveal overlooked details.
Cole has made his first court appearance and faces charges for transporting an explosive device across state lines and attempting to maliciously destroy property using an explosive. Reports indicate that he spoke with investigators, admitting to his role in installing the devices while expressing concerns about the results of the 2020 presidential election.
