Authorities Seek Help Identifying Long Island Murder Victims
Suffolk County prosecutors are reaching out to the public for assistance in identifying two women who were murdered and left on Long Island decades ago by a well-known serial killer.
The first victim, referred to as “Medford Jane Doe,” was dismembered by Robert Shulman in 1994. Prosecutors claim he also took the lives of three sex workers and is suspected in many more cases. Shulman passed away in prison in 2006.
Described as being about 5 feet 1 inch tall and weighing around 135 pounds, the Medford victim is estimated to have been between 20 and 30 years old when she died. She was found stuffed in a blue Rubbermaid trash can, abandoned on the roadside.
Authorities noted that the victim had a distinctive tattoo of the name “Adrian” on her left shoulder.
The second victim, known as “Bellport Jane Doe,” was killed in 1983 by her landlord, Arthur Kinlaw, who prosecutors say referred to her as Maria or Marie. Kinlaw, 72, has been convicted of two other second-degree murder charges and is currently serving a sentence of 20 years to life.
The prosecutor’s office has released renderings of both women and is actively seeking help to identify them.
Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney issued a statement urging the public to examine the details and descriptions provided. “We believe someone must know something,” Tierney said. “No detail is too small. Even the slightest piece of information could aid in bringing answers to families who’ve waited far too long.”
This outreach coincides with National Missing Persons Day, highlighting the ongoing cold case investigations that have been linked to identifying victims associated with the Gilgo Beach serial killer, Rex Heuerman, who faces charges in the deaths of seven sex workers.
