Body Camera Footage Released from Michigan Church Shooting
Recently, Michigan police made public body camera footage from the officers who responded to a shooting at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where the gunman was ultimately killed.
In the tragic incident that occurred in Grand Blanc, Thomas Jacob Sanford is charged with killing four individuals and injuring eight more during a Sunday service. Reports indicate that he drove his truck into the church and opened fire, igniting a fire while the congregation was still gathered inside.
The Grand Blanc Township Police Department provided the footage, which depicts officers rushing towards the church amidst the sound of gunfire.
At one point, an officer can be heard yelling at Sanford, urging him to “Get on the ground.” Another voice commands him to drop his weapon immediately, followed by the sounds of gunfire as Sanford is seen later in the parking lot.
The first 911 call about the shooting came in at 10:25 AM, and authorities report that the first responder arrived merely two minutes later but was shot in the abdomen while attempting to intervene.
Grand Blanc Police Chief William Renee mentioned in a press conference that the footage serves as a clear indication of law enforcement training in action. Meanwhile, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that the FBI believes Sanford harbored animosity towards individuals of the Mormon faith.
Leavitt noted, “From my discussions with the FBI, they have determined that this individual had a hatred for Mormons, and they’re working to uncover more details about the planning of this attack.” Questions remain about whether there was any written message left by Sanford.
Leavitt further praised the local officers for their quick response, emphasizing their role in saving lives during such tragic events.
As the investigation unfolds, the FBI has categorized the shooting as an act of targeted violence.
