Ayatollah Khamenei Calls for 'Strong National Unity' Amid Signs of Division in Political Leadership

Speech by Khamenei Calls for National Unity

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, known as Iran’s “Super Leader,” recently urged the nation to fully align with the regime, framing this unity as an “iron shield” against perceived threats from the U.S. and Israel.

This statement was made during the observance of Iran’s “Government Week,” which commemorates the anniversary of the assassinations of former President Mohammad Ali Rajay and Prime Minister Mohammad Javad Bahonar in 1981. There’s also a notable connection to Imam Reza, the eighth Imam of Shia Islam, marking his significance in Iranian culture. Following this context, the political discourse has been rather heated, particularly after recent airstrikes that reportedly damaged key nuclear sites in Iran.

Several reports throughout August indicated that members of the former administration under President Hassan Rouhani expressed the necessity of negotiating with the U.S. to maintain their grip on power. President Masuud Pezeshkian, who campaigned with a moderate approach, reinforced this call for unity behind Khamenei, distancing himself from any push for improved U.S. relations.

Khamenei maintained that normalizing relations with the U.S. is impossible due to what he described as Washington’s attempts to dominate Iran. He stated, “The U.S. wants Iran to be obedient,” emphasizing that the Iranian populace is angered by such humiliation and is strong against these expectations.

He downplayed the idea of negotiation with the U.S. as insufficient and dismissed discussions regarding alternative strategies in light of the current diplomatic situation.

In his address, Khamenei stressed the importance of unity among the Iranian people and leaders, urging support for President Pezeshkian. He reiterated that Iran had overcome what some term the “12-day war,” during which Israel carried out significant military actions to undermine Iran’s capabilities. The U.S. was also involved, with former President Donald Trump praising the operation’s success.

Khamenei remarked on the military setbacks faced by the U.S. and Israel, asserting that their failures stemmed from Iran’s strong resistance and unity among its state and military officials. He noted that foreign adversaries are now seeking to disrupt this unity within Iran.

He recognized the resilience of the Iranian people despite political and social differences, warning against the influences of internal disruptors and external foes.

This emphasis on national unity comes amid rumors of growing opposition within the government. An independent outlet highlighted a significant internal struggle influenced by former President Rouhani and ex-Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif. The Rouhani administration was key in negotiating the 2015 nuclear deal. Recently, Zarif called for expanding democracy in Iran to stabilize the country and enhance its foreign policy stance. Khamenei and his loyalists condemned these suggestions as betrayals and signs of weakness.

Moreover, a group of moderates advocated for a gentler approach toward the West, including proposals to limit uranium enrichment and release political prisoners. However, Khamenei firmly rejected all reform proposals pertaining to human rights, reaffirming that Iran would not accept constraints on its nuclear activities.

The aftermath of the recent military tensions combined with economic challenges like inflation and currency devaluation has created a precarious situation in Iran. Former President Rouhani voiced that improving relationships with Western nations could be beneficial, questioning why they should not seek better ties that serve their interests.
