'Back to the Frontier' by Chip and Joanna Gaines Faces Criticism from Evangelical Viewers Over Same-Sex Couple Representation

New Show by Chip and Joanna Gaines Faces Backlash Over Same-Sex Couples

Chip and Joanna Gaines, known for their home improvement shows, have generated criticism among their faith-based viewers due to the inclusion of same-sex couples in their latest project. Historically, they have attracted a Christian audience, but recent developments have stirred discontent.

The new series, titled Fixer Upper: Return to the Frontier, showcases families living without modern technology for a summer, attempting to capture the essence of the 1880s homestay lifestyle. The show, produced in collaboration with Max and Magnolia Network, features couples navigating this unique challenge in the Canadian Rockies.

Among the participants are Dallas residents Joe Riggs and Jason Hanna, who spent eight weeks in a small cabin with Hanna’s twin sons. Their involvement sparked a wave of response from evangelical leaders upset about the show’s direction.

Franklin Graham, the son of renowned evangelist Billy Graham, took to social media expressing his disapproval, stating, “I hope this is not true,” while emphasizing his belief in a traditional definition of marriage.

In the face of backlash, Chip Gaines addressed the criticism in a post on social media, urging dialogue and understanding about modern American Christian culture. He hinted at the complexity of these issues, suggesting that conversations about faith should consider different perspectives.

Joe Riggs and Jason Hanna explained that they viewed their participation as a chance to represent families like theirs and encourage acceptance. In an Instagram message, Hannah emphasized the importance of visibility, saying it helps others feel loved and supported.

As the show prepares for its debut, the discussion surrounding it brings attention to broader societal themes of acceptance and representation in media.
