A major public relations firm has been engaged to enhance California’s reputation, which has faced scrutiny. This firm is linked to the Saudi royal family.

Edelman, recognized as one of the foremost telecommunications firms in the U.S., has secured a contract valued at approximately $19 million using taxpayer money to bolster California’s image, especially following Governor Gavin Newsom’s contentious election.

The initiative kicks off on Monday and is set to continue through the end of the year, coinciding with the conclusion of Newsom’s term.

This firm previously assisted the Saudi government in rehabilitating its international image following the assassination of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018, a case that drew significant global attention.

Khashoggi, who was notably critical of the Saudi regime, was killed by a group of Saudi agents within the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2, 2018.

Following his death, his remains were never found, and U.S. intelligence determined that the operation was likely sanctioned by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Reports indicate that the Crown Prince, who serves as Prime Minister and is seen as the prospective heir, engaged Edelman on a five-year deal in 2022. His role was to guide Saudi officials on improving their global perception, especially post-Khashoggi’s murder, which severely tainted the kingdom’s reputation.

The contract reportedly compensated Edelman around $787,000 annually for his consultation.

Recently, the California Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development awarded Edelman the California Brand Campaign contract, following a proposal request from last year intended to highlight the state’s diverse business landscape.

Edelman has a history of representing numerous high-profile clients, spanning various industries and political figures.

Richard Edelman, the firm’s CEO, has consulted for brands such as Sara Lee and Advil, as well as organizations including the California Wine Institute.

His firm has also maintained ties with politics, working with former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa among others.

Aside from the Saudi government, Edelman has represented other notable clients, including those connected to the Saudi-backed LIV Golf Tour.

Notable American figures, such as Jared Kushner, who is linked to former President Donald Trump, also hold connections with Saudi officials, pursuing investments in his private equity endeavors.

Inquiries were made by the California Post to both Edelman and the governor’s office regarding the contract and prior engagements of the firm.
