Bacon urges 'respect' for election

In an interview Sunday, Rep. Don Bacon (R-Nebraska) urged people to “respect” “our elections” as the 2024 election approaches.

“We have to respect elections. I understand that, but candidates have the right to go to court and appeal or … challenge the various processes,” Bacon said. He spoke to NewsNation's Chris Stilwald in an interview on “The Hill Sunday.”

Bacon, along with five other Republicans, signed a bipartisan letter released in September led by centrists pledging to honor the results of November's election.

“In the United States, we respect election results, especially after they have been processed through the courts and appeals process,” Bacon said in a statement at the time. “We will fight hard to win during elections and respect the results when votes are counted.

Mr Bacon said there should be “no hesitation at all in saying we support the winner of the election”.

As Election Day approaches, former President Trump's denial of the 2020 election results is back in the headlines. In a debate with Vice President Harris last month, Trump pushed back against the idea that he had accepted his loss to President Biden four years ago.

President Trump said, “No, I don't approve of that at all.”

President Trump's running mate, Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance, also recently said that “according to the words I would use,” the former president would not have lost to Biden in 2020.

“I think there were serious issues in 2020. So did Donald Trump lose the election? That's not a word I would use,” Vance said at a campaign event in Pennsylvania.
