Scottish bagpipers have seen a surge in attention after a video showcasing their music went viral, highlighting the tensions surrounding foreign cultural influences. At just 20, Robin Alderslow felt compelled to share Scottish music worldwide, embodying a mission to preserve his culture.
Alderslow has traveled to places like Korea and Australia, but it was his content from India that really drew in followers—and unexpected backlash. Surprisingly, much of the criticism came from fellow Scots.
Mixed Reactions
In a discussion with Blaze News, Alderslow noted that while many people are initially “shocked” by his presence in India, the local population generally welcomes him. “It’s often misinterpreted; those confused expressions? They’re not anger—they’re just curious and happy to see me,” he said.
However, he has faced accusations of racism from other Scots, including one encounter in Australia. A Scottish woman recognized him from his viral post, labeled him with harsh epithets, and expressed her disdain.
Divisions Among Bagpipers
Alderslow has also been distanced from the Scottish bagpiping community. The vibrant busking scene on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile has roots in its military history, but Alderslow’s recent video appearances have led to ostracization from some performers. “I can’t play there anymore,” he lamented.
When questioned about whether he seeks a place in the world for his music beyond a political message, Alderslow emphasized the complexities of culture and immigration. “The essence of immigration is about how new arrivals blend into our culture—whether that’s good or bad,” he explained.
Struggling with Identity
Alderslow’s frustration stems from the cultural narrative that discourages pride among Westerners. “We often hear, ‘white people don’t have a culture.’ But the key to correcting immigration issues lies in reassessing our own views on heritage and history,” he asserted.
He posed a thought-provoking question: “As Europeans, how can we be proud of our past?” He also shared the pushback he receives for not conforming to typical British stereotypes.
Years of being urged to tone down his Scottish accent and abandon stereotypical imagery left him feeling boxed in. “The noise of our culture is crucial—it’s how we keep it alive,” he pointed out. “In Scotland, if you ask someone about their culture, they’ll proudly say they’re proud. But then, if someone expresses that pride too loudly, it’s labeled as ‘white supremacy’ or linked to extremism.”
Controversial Moments
Accusations of racism against Alderslow seem unfounded given his history. In February, a social media post where he and friends skipped a long queue at a nightclub in Goa led to local frustration, though it didn’t shield him from online backlash.
His online presence is currently hampered by various restrictions on platforms like Instagram, affecting his ability to connect and share cultural messages. He expressed hope that, despite these challenges, he can continue to advocate for his culture. “To retain our culture, we must proudly speak it out loud,” he said.
