Buccaneers’ Winning Streak Ends Against Lions
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ two-game winning streak was halted Monday night with a 24-9 defeat against the Detroit Lions. Surprisingly, much of the focus after the game shifted to the officiating rather than the Lions’ solid performance. In fact, in the fourth quarter, Tampa Bay quarterback Baker Mayfield confronted one of the officials about a call.
Mayfield, reflecting on the heated moment, expressed his thoughts on the game. “I’m still pretty confused about the double review, and that third-down defensive holding wasn’t called,” he noted. “There were so many questionable calls… I put a lot into this game, so I feel it’s only fair to voice my concerns.”
The incident he mentioned involved a significant play late in the second half. Mayfield had thrown a short pass to tight end Cade Otton on fourth down, which the officials initially ruled a completed catch, giving the Buccaneers both possession and a first down. But after a Lions challenge, the referee went back to review the footage and ultimately reversed the decision, much to the team’s frustration.
Additionally, emotions ran high earlier in the game when a 3-yard pass to Otton was controversially ruled as an interception by the Lions. These changes understandably stirred discontent among the players and fans alike.
On a separate note, the Bucs struggled against the Lions’ running attack, where Jahmil Gibbs rushed for 136 yards and two touchdowns. In sharp contrast, Tampa Bay managed only 41 rushing yards in total throughout the game.
Compounding their troubles, star wide receiver Mike Evans had to leave the field on a medical cart. He was later diagnosed with a fractured clavicle, raising concerns about his availability moving forward.
This weekend, the Buccaneers are set to face the New Orleans Saints, a crucial matchup against their NFC South rivals.
