Part of Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge was collided with a cargo ship early Tuesday, causing part of it to collapse and sending multiple vehicles into the ocean.

“Due to an accident on the I-695 Key Bridge, all lanes are closed in both directions. Traffic is being detoured,” the Maryland Department of Transportation posted on X.
Kevin Cartwright, director of public affairs for the Baltimore Fire Department, said emergency responders were searching for at least seven people believed to be in the water.
He said the agency received a 911 call around 1:30 a.m. reporting that a ship sailing from Baltimore had struck a bridge pillar, causing the bridge to collapse. Several vehicles were parked on the bridge at the time, including one the size of a tractor-trailer.
“Our focus right now is trying to rescue and rehabilitate these people,” Cartwright said. He described the collapse as an “ongoing mass casualty event”, although he said it was too early to know how many people were affected.
