Baltimore Mayor Faces Backlash Over Vehicle Costs and Comments

Mayor Brandon Scott of Baltimore is under scrutiny regarding his use of taxpayer funds for transportation following a recent press conference where he implied racism might be influencing the criticism he faces.

Scott, who has been in office since 2020, is operating a 2025 Jeep Grand Wagoneer, which reportedly costs taxpayers $163,495—making it the most expensive government-issued vehicle among state officials, including mayors and governors.

In response to the backlash regarding the vehicle’s cost, Scott mentioned that comparisons to other expensive vehicles, like Donald Trump’s “Beast,” should account for inflation, suggesting that the political narrative around this issue is biased.

During an exchange with reporters, he referred to the questions as “stupid” and part of a “right-wing” campaign aimed at undermining him. He claimed criticism based on racism is also a factor.

While promoting himself as a challenger to the “status quo,” Scott is trying to tackle an $85 million budget deficit. He has positioned himself as an environmental activist, although, interestingly, his selected vehicle has a modest fuel efficiency of 14 miles per gallon.

The mayor’s interaction with reporters ignited criticism on social media, particularly from conservatives. Maryland Republican State Representative Kathy Sheriga remarked that Scott’s reaction to the questioning—calling a reporter a racist—seemed like a deflection from the issue of spending taxpayer money on a luxury vehicle.

Another commentator pointed out that the exchange appeared to be a classic example of avoidance, suggesting that identity politics are influencing the city’s leadership. Conservative influencers and commentators joined the fray, calling his remarks out as attempts to sidestep accountability.

Scott has historically criticized the traditional political practices in Baltimore, asserting that previous leaders have favored flashy, ineffective solutions over tangible improvements in transportation safety and quality.

A spokesperson for the mayor’s office countered claims about the vehicle’s cost and noted that its price includes safety modifications necessary for its operation as the mayor’s vehicle. They emphasized that the city makes a point to budget for a new mayoral vehicle every four years, due to the extensive use needed for official duties.

The spokesperson also dismissed the claim that Scott’s vehicle is the most expensive among state officials, arguing that the report lacked comprehensive evidence to support that conclusion. They pointed out that not all jurisdictions provided documentation and varied in vehicle replacement protocols, emphasizing that comparisons were not entirely fair.

Notably, the spokesperson did not address Scott’s comments regarding racism, leaving that aspect somewhat unresolved.
