Obamas Speak Out on Killing of Alex Preti

Former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama have voiced their concerns regarding the killing of Alex Preti, describing it as a wake-up call for the nation. They criticized federal immigration authorities in Minnesota for lacking accountability and employing tactics that intimidate and jeopardize residents’ safety.

In a joint statement released on Sunday, the Obamas connected Preti’s death to an increase in federal immigration enforcement that has led to protests and heightened tensions in Minnesota. They noted the intense reaction to Preti’s shooting reflects the deepening divisions and escalating conflicts across the country.

Preti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse at a Veterans Affairs hospital in Minneapolis, was fatally shot by Border Patrol agents during an immigration raid targeting Jose Huerta Chuma, an undocumented immigrant with a criminal background, according to federal officials.

Officials from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated that Preti approached the officers while armed with a 9mm handgun and resisted attempts to disarm him. He was declared dead at the scene, having possessed a valid firearm permit.

The Obamas interpreted this tragic event as indicative of a larger issue, urging the public to reflect on its broader implications. “The murder of Alex Preti is a heartbreaking tragedy,” they expressed, “and should serve as a wake-up call to all Americans, regardless of party affiliation, that many of our core values as a nation are under increasing attack.” They emphasized the expectation that federal law enforcement act responsibly and collaboratively with local authorities to ensure public safety.

However, they claimed that the situation in Minnesota suggests the opposite is happening. The Obamas commented on the outrage across the nation regarding federal agents’ aggressive actions, referring to them as intimidating and hazardous tactics. They criticized the response from the Trump administration and DHS officials for their apparent lack of accountability for those involved.

Furthermore, they expressed skepticism about the thoroughness of the investigations into both Preti’s death and that of Renee Good, a mother of three who was also shot by ICE agents. The Obamas suggested that the agency was prematurely drawing conclusions without fully examining all evidence.

“This has to stop,” the Obamas urged. They called for government officials to reconsider their strategies and work constructively with state and local law enforcement to prevent further violence and chaos.

They also encouraged support for the ongoing protests in Minneapolis and nationwide. “These peaceful demonstrations are vital reminders of our responsibility as citizens to confront injustice, safeguard fundamental freedoms, and hold our governments accountable,” the statement concluded.
