Obama Supports Newsom’s Gerrymandering Plan in California
Former President Barack Obama has expressed his approval for Governor Gavin Newsom’s gerrymandering initiative in California, which is targeted at Republicans in Texas.
According to reports, the new districting plan proposed by Newsom could eliminate at least four of the nine Republican-held districts in California.
Currently, Republicans control only nine of California’s 52 congressional seats—about 17%. If the proposed changes go through, that number may drop to five, pushing their representation below 10%, as noted in reports.
Interestingly, nearly 40% of voters in California opted for Republican candidates in the last election cycle. Some might argue that the game was already decided, regardless.
Obama termed this plan a rational and measured strategy. He remarked, “In the long term, we ought to eliminate political gerrymanders in America, but I admire the governor’s approach.”
He elaborated that Texas has adopted partisan tactics to preserve its political power amidst unpopular policies. In contrast, California’s approach aims to tackle specific issues at critical moments.
Obama praised Newsom’s plans during a fundraising event at Martha’s Vineyard on Tuesday. He mentioned that they would consider further actions only if Republican states continue to engage in similar maneuvers.
A Republican representative in California has called for an end to Newsom’s initiatives.
