As a broader regional war looms, three U.S. Navy warships came under a barrage of missile and drone fire from Houthi terrorists Thursday as they sailed through the Red Sea on their way to aid Israel.

Houthi military commander Brigadier General Yahya Saleh said the USS Spruance, USS Stockdale and USS Indianapolis were targeted “while en route to assisting and aiding Israel's enemies.”

Salih also claimed the operation was a “direct hit,” but U.S. officials disputed this, saying all 23 projectiles fired were intercepted.

This is the largest attack carried out by the Houthis against an American ship, but it is not the first such attack, as the USS Carney shot down 14 Houthi drones targeting a destroyer in December.

The increase in rocket fires stems from the large-scale escalation between Israeli and Iranian proxies that has emerged from the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

In addition to targeting American warships, the Yemen-based Houthis announced that they had fired missiles targeting the Israeli cities of Tel Aviv and Ashkelon, although Israeli Defense Force officials said they It was reported that the missile had been intercepted.

Meanwhile, Saleh vowed to continue missile strikes until the Israeli offensive in Gaza and Lebanon ends.

Israeli officials have recently suggested that they are actively preparing for a ground invasion of Lebanon, and that Israel is preparing to target Hezbollah terrorists who are supporting Hamas in its war against the Jewish state. Lebanese civilians were warned to evacuate their homes immediately.

Saleh added: “We will carry out further military operations against Israel's enemies in order to win for the blood of our Palestinian and Lebanese brethren.”
