Amy Coney Barrett’s Upcoming Memoir and Views on Abortion Ruling

Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett is set to defend the 2022 ruling that overturned decades of abortion rights in her forthcoming memoir, stating that the court acted in accordance with what she believes to be the views of the American public.

Barrett argues that “it does not indicate that Americans traditionally consider the right to abortion,” suggesting that evidence actually points in another direction. She emphasizes that abortion lacks longstanding protection under American law and has historically been restricted.

Her memoir, titled Listening to the Law: Courts and Constitutional Reflections, will be available next Tuesday through Sentinel, a conservative imprint of Penguin Random House. According to reports, Barrett entered a $2 million agreement with Sentinel back in 2021.

While CNN secured some insights from the book, they did not conduct an interview with Barrett prior to its release. The publisher has yet to respond to requests for comments regarding the memoir.

In the controversial 5-4 decision, which Barrett supported, the court held that states should have the ultimate authority over abortion legislation. She remarked that applying the law faithfully involves making decisions based on her best understanding of legal principles, cautious as they may be.

Barrett delves into what she describes as “complex moral debates” surrounding abortion, distinguishing it from other divisive topics like marriage and contraception. She plans to mark her book’s release with an event at the Reagan Presidential Foundation & Institute in California next week.

As the third Supreme Court Justice appointed during President Trump’s first term, Barrett stepped into a notable role following the passing of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, just days before the 2020 election. In her memoir, she reflects on how her time on the court has altered her perceptions of its operations.

She expressed past frustrations with the ambiguous language often used in legal opinions and the seemingly obvious points left unresolved. However, she acknowledges a newfound appreciation for the cautious nature of court deliberations.

Barrett also addresses the ongoing challenges faced by the courts, noting that while issues may persist, the work of justices remains centered on their commitment to the law.
