Barrett justifies Jackson's criticisms as 'justified' during unusual public event

Judge Amy Coney Barrett Discusses Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson

New York – Judge Amy Coney Barrett shared her thoughts on the recent controversial views surrounding a universal injunction during an event on Thursday. She expressed her belief that Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson made appropriate arguments in this context.

When asked by Bali Weiss from Free Press about her insightful comments regarding Jackson, Barrett noted she felt Jackson “set the calibration right” in a majority opinion she penned in June.

“I thought Judge Jackson presented a strong argument, which I believe justified the response,” Barrett remarked.

Barrett, appointed by Trump, spoke at Manhattan’s Lincoln Center kicking off a promotional series for her new book, “Announcement,” coinciding with the Supreme Court’s conclusion of its session.

Meanwhile, some federal judges have anonymously criticized the Supreme Court’s move to overturn a decision in an emergency ruling.

Discussing her take on the universal injunction, Barrett mentioned, “I personally don’t—well, I suppose you could say I’m not spicy. I’m from New Orleans, and everyone likes a bit of Tabasco now and then.”

Her remarks addressed queries about the Supreme Court’s controversial emergency order against efforts to impose an injunction on the government. These injunctions, as seen in Trump vs. Casa, have become contentious, as judges often block Trump’s significant policies, only for the Supreme Court to reverse those orders later.

Additionally, an appeals court has prevented Trump from dismissing FTC commissioners, challenging the president’s removal powers.

In her opinion banning a universal injunction, Barrett accused Jackson of aligning with what she called an “imperial judiciary,” and encouraged people to consider the objections from her colleagues.

At the event, Barrett stated her “deepest respect for Jackson,” clarifying that her comments were not a personal attack. “We simply didn’t agree on the scope of jurisdiction,” she said.

She added, “I argue against ideas, not people,” attributing this sentiment to the late Judge Antonin Scalia. Barrett emphasized that, despite differences, her interactions with colleagues remained friendly.

In a playful moment, Barrett was asked to describe each of her fellow justices in just one word. When it came to Chief Judge John Roberts, she responded quickly. For Judge Neil Gorsuch, she said he “goes west,” while her term for Judge Brett Kavanaugh was “sports.” When reflecting on Jackson, she paused, finally describing her as “Actor, Broadway.”
