Barry Sanders, a Hall of Famer, shares that he experienced a heart attack.

Barry Sanders, the legendary football player, recently disclosed that he had a heart attack about a year ago and is now dedicated to raising awareness about heart health.

The former running back for the Detroit Lions shared with fans in June 2024 his frightening experience with heart issues. He is currently discussing his journey in a documentary titled “The Making of a Heart Attack.”

“Honestly, I was shocked,” the 56-year-old said, reflecting on the incident. “I thought it was just heartburn, but it lingered,” he explained in an interview that aired on Friday.

On the day of his heart attack, Sanders woke up feeling an intense burning sensation in his chest. Although he had plans to attend a recruitment visit for his son, he ended up heading to the hospital for evaluation. Tests indicated alarmingly high enzyme levels, and a cardiac procedure resulted in a heart attack.

“I honestly never thought it could happen to me,” Sanders remarked during the interview.

Now, he is focusing on staying active and keeping up with regular doctor’s appointments.

“What we’re finding through this experience is that warning signs can often be misleading. This is why it’s crucial to see a doctor and get tested for LDL cholesterol. It’s the only way to really know if you have high levels,” he advised.

“You can’t feel it. You don’t need to fit a certain physical stereotype.”

His documentary also features the stories of four others who have faced heart attacks and strokes, aiming to shed light on unseen health risks and information that could be valuable to the public.

“For me, it was really about education. I became aware of how prevalent this issue is in our country,” Sanders said, highlighting the important narratives shared in the film. “I think it’s going to resonate with many viewers.”

Nearly a year since his own experience, Sanders shared that his health has improved significantly due to adhering to doctors’ recommendations involving medication, increased walking, and dietary adjustments.

“As someone who used to be an athlete, I often see people walking and wonder about the effectiveness of their exercise. But there’s something known as heart-healthy training, where you gradually elevate your heart rate over time, and that really benefits your heart,” he elaborated.

“I had some misconceptions about these matters, but I’ve learned a lot,” he acknowledged.

“Sometimes it’s just genetic; it doesn’t mean you’re doing something wrong,” he added.

Lastly, Sanders expressed his appreciation towards his fans and everyone who supported him during his recovery.
