The Chicago Cubs immortalized Ryne Sandberg in June.
Less than two months after the statue was unveiled to mark the 40th anniversary of his two late home runs in a nationally televised game against the St. Louis Cardinals, the former Cubs second baseman announced he is cancer-free.
Sandberg took to Instagram to thank her doctors, family, friends and everyone who has supported her over the past few months during her battle with metastatic prostate cancer.

“The bell rang this morning!” he wrote. “We did it, we won! The people who have supported Margaret and I over the past 8 months – family, doctors, friends, nurses, fans – we have been a dream team!” Sandberg captioned it. A series of photos showing him, his wife and hospital staff.
“We are so happy with the outpouring of love, prayers, thoughts and positive words sent our way. Modern medicine has come a long way so early detection is still key. Annual check-up! Let’s celebrate! #godisgood.”

Last month, Sandberg revealed that scans showed no signs of cancer.

Sandberg played 16 seasons in the major leagues, batting .285 with 282 home runs, 1,061 RBIs and 344 stolen bases. He made his major league debut with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1981 and appeared in 13 games for the Phillies before signing with the Cubs in January 1982.
Sandberg became one of the best all-around players in major league baseball with the Cubs, earning 10 MLB All-Star selections, nine Gold Glove awards and winning the National League MVP award in 1984.

He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2005.
