American politicians have a long and storied history, but it's important to never take them too seriously. Democratic proceedings often have carnival-like aspects. Still, I can't help but imagine America's founders looking down in dismay at the disgrace that befalls the republic they founded on a daily basis. The recent election of a man who identifies as a woman to the U.S. House of Representatives represents just the latest embarrassment. Rep. Tim McBride (D-Delaware), who now goes by Sarah, has become a lightning rod for controversy. But the Republicans' clumsy and timid response to the situation was even more disappointing.
McBride's election raised concerns among some female members about sharing bathrooms with biological men. These concerns date back to 2016, when Target announced a policy allowing men who identify as transgender to use women's restrooms.
After a decisive electoral victory, we cannot retreat into the lazy and reactionary habit of simply responding to leftist rhetoric.
Shortly after, the Obama administration issued a directive requiring schools to allow transgender students to use restrooms and locker rooms that correspond to their gender identity. Gyms, pools, and other public facilities soon followed suit, forcing women and girls to endure male exposure in spaces traditionally reserved for women.
Although “wokeness” had not yet become a mainstream term, the events of 2016 marked the beginning of a long cultural struggle. What was once known as social justice and political correctness has morphed into a far more radical movement. In a rational world, the absurdity of this ideology would have killed it on arrival. But eight years later, the country is still grappling with the strange question of whether a man can be a woman.
In response to this ongoing debate, Rep. Nancy Mace (R.S.C.) urged members of the House of Representatives to use the restroom according to their biological sex rather than the outfit they choose to wear that day. proposed a resolution requiring This resolution is perfectly reasonable and would have been easy for Republicans to defend. Unfortunately, the Republican Party's response to the situation has become a clown show.
Johnson chokes
The first failure occurred when Rep. Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) refused to answer a straightforward question about whether McBride was a man or a woman. During a press conference that mentioned restroom and locker room issues, Johnson repeatedly dodged questions and instead said all members deserve dignity and respect. Although this sentiment was true, it was clear that Johnson used it to avoid directly addressing McBride's gender.
Given the themes raised at the press conference, Prime Minister Johnson should have anticipated the questions and prepared clear answers. McBride is the guy, totally. As leader of the Republican-controlled House of Representatives, Johnson's hesitation was puzzling as he was charged with advancing Donald Trump's policies.
The uproar over Mr Johnson's evasive response forced him to call a public meeting. Number 2 At a press conference, he finally stated his belief that a man cannot become a woman. Mr Johnson claimed the question was so ridiculous that he initially chose not to dignify it with his answer. However, given his previous hesitation, this explanation rang hollow. Notably, Johnson still avoided explicitly identifying McBride as a man or taking any specific action to protect female members of the House.
If Prime Minister Johnson's response to this controversy is a reflection of how he intends to approach implementation of his MAGA agenda, it raises serious concerns for his leadership. His timidity in addressing fundamental issues does not inspire confidence.
Mace reaps what he sows
The second failure was due to Mace himself. Her efforts to protect her female colleagues reflected the right instincts, but her execution left much to be desired. After describing herself as a feminist, Mace posted on X (Former Twitter):
This is so strange to me. Twenty-five years ago, I was celebrated as the first woman to graduate from the previously all-male Army War College. Today, I am attacked as a “bigot” for fighting for women's rights. The radical left has lost its mind.
Using left-wing frameworks and language is always a mistake. Attempts to justify an opponent's position in order to expose hypocrisy often end up being a rhetorical failure for conservatives. But more troubling is the cognitive dissonance revealed in Mace's statement.
Mace, on the other hand, seeks to defend women-only spaces based on the conservative belief that men and women are inherently different and that women deserve a separate space from men. On the other hand, she hopes to be celebrated as a feminist who broke gender barriers at the once all-boys school, The Citadel University. Mace would like to win credit for helping to dismantle men's spaces, but like many before her, she believes the cultural revolution she championed reached her home's bathroom door. When you feel fear.
Military colleges and toilets are obviously not the same. Allowing men into women's restrooms or sports immediately raises safety concerns, and efforts to protect women in these spaces are completely justified. But discussions with veterans about the impact on force safety and cohesion after introducing women into front-line roles revealed more striking similarities than first glance.
Time to clarify
Mike Johnson needs to grow taller, but more importantly, the conservative movement needs to decide what it really believes about men and women. Are men and women inherently different, or do those beliefs apply only when they benefit women? Biological reality influences social roles and structures beyond the bathroom and the soccer field Do men matter, or is “women’s rights” just a conservative topic to allow movements to participate within a leftist framework?
The fact that, in 2024, the Republican Party still has not answered these basic questions is embarrassing and alarming. To lead and take advantage of the future possibilities created by President Trump's historic re-election victory, conservatives need to understand their identity and core beliefs. After a decisive electoral victory, we cannot retreat into the lazy and reactionary habit of simply responding to leftist rhetoric.
When a movement lacks a clear sense of purpose and belief, ridiculous failures like the one we just witnessed are inevitable. The Republican Party needs to address these issues quickly because Americans expect strong leadership with a decisive mission and not political comedy.
