“Mexican Batman” Under Police Investigation for Vigilante Actions
A vigilante in Jalisco, known as the “Mexican Batman,” is facing police scrutiny after reportedly binding an alleged thief to a telephone pole.
Since mid-June, five individuals have been found duct-taped to lampposts, visible to early morning commuters, before being taken away by law enforcement. Local reports indicate that the suspects often had their faces drawn upon or were marked with the word “Rata” (rat) across their foreheads, adding to their public shaming.
Additionally, large pink posters accompany these arrests, calling attention to the motorcycle thefts and urging the suspects to cease their criminal activities.
Journalist Luis Cardenas noted that this anonymous vigilante claimed to have apprehended five robbers within a span of ten days, stating a lack of support from authorities in his efforts.
On June 17, a photo surfaced showing two 18-year-olds bound with tape, their mouths covered and faces painted. That same day, another young man was found nearby with a warning message regarding motorcycle theft. Reports confirm that the motorcycle linked to these incidents was indeed stolen, illustrating a troubling rise in motorcycle thefts in the area.
As social media buzzes about these vigilante actions, the state attorney general’s office has initiated an investigation, looking into both the motorcycle thieves and this “Batman” figure, citing potential breaches of the law.
Police continue to regard those found tied up as victims, even noting injuries on one of them. Investigators have also identified two vehicles that might have been involved in these incidents.
