Bayern Munich Overwhelms Auckland City in Club World Cup Match
It’s not every day you’d expect to see a match reminiscent of David and Goliath in a Club World Cup, but that was exactly the scenario on the second day of the tournament. Bayern Munich, representing the Goliath side, completely dominated New Zealand’s Auckland City, winning 10-0.
The Bundesliga powerhouse outshot Auckland City 31-1, with Jamal Musiala entering as a substitute in the 61st minute and scoring a hat-trick. Thomas Muller, Kingsley Coman, and Michael Oris each netted two goals in the decisive victory.
For those curious about how an amateur club like Auckland City ended up in the Club World Cup, it qualifies through being one of the top teams in the Oceania Champions League, which is framed as a competition for the best football clubs worldwide.
Bayern has a storied history, winning the Champions League 13 times and showing up multiple times in past editions of the Club World Cup.
This year’s format is notably improved, expanding the Club World Cup to include 32 teams. It features two professional teams from New Zealand, Wellington Phoenix and Auckland FC, who both compete in the Australian A-League.
However, due to the affiliation rules—New Zealand being part of the Oceania Football Union and Australia with the Asian Football Union—Wellington Phoenix and Auckland FC cannot participate in club competitions for either federation.
This setup allowed Auckland City, comprised of players with regular day jobs, to face off against some of the sport’s elite clubs.
Connor Tracy, the goalkeeper for Auckland City, reflected on their journey saying, “Every previous Club World Cup included preparation for just one game. This was unique in its own right.” He mentioned how exciting it was to draw Bayern Munich, laughing with his brother about the prospect of Harry Kane scoring against them.
Tracy juggles his football career with his job as a supervisor at a veterinary supply warehouse, while teammate Jordan Vale works as a school teacher. Another player, Harris Zeb, mentioned his experiences going about daily life: “This week, I woke up, loaded my car with parcels, and chased off a barking dog. Next month, I’ll be playing against Bayern Munich. It feels surreal!”
Auckland City will face two more group stage matches, including a clash against Portugal’s Benfica and Argentina’s Boca Juniors, on June 24th.
