The 2024 BBC Young Musician Competition was tonight won by 17-year-old pianist Ryan Wang.
In the final, three musicians competed, each performing a concerto with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales conducted by Ben Gernon in front of an audience at the Bristol Beacon. Wang was born in Canada and is studying A-levels at Eton College in Windsor on a music scholarship. He began playing the piano at the age of four and gave his first solo recital at Carnegie Hall in New York at the age of five.
The judges, trumpeter Alison Balsam, pianist Alexis French, and multi-instrumentalist and DJ Hannah-Katherine Jones, described Wang as “a truly remarkable musician” and praised her for her perfection. He praised his unique technique and extraordinary level of artistry.
“He has an extremely rare ability to convey something otherworldly and embody music. We all know he is creating the kind of magic in the final. “It was obvious,” Balsam said.
“I'm honored…and grateful for the support I've received,” Wang said. “My experience at this competition was amazing and I was very lucky to meet some great musicians.” Wang won the trophy and a one-year management contract. Trust of young classical artists.
The competition is held every two years. The 2022 winner was a percussionist Jordan Ashman. Also a Chinese-born percussionist who won the 2020 competition (postponed to 2021 due to the pandemic) fan chan. This year, the format was changed, and instead of category finals, 12 musicians were selected for the quarterfinal round, six advanced to the semifinals, and three of them were selected for the final.
