Ben Johnson Rethinks Aikman’s Comments
Ben Johnson, the head coach of the Bears, isn’t hiding his dissatisfaction with Troy Aikman.
Following Chicago’s victory over the Commanders on Monday night, Johnson seemed to subtly criticize ESPN analysts who were particularly harsh towards Caleb Williams, despite the Bears clinching the win. “I think some folks weren’t thrilled with how we won,” he told ESPN Chicago on Tuesday, carefully avoiding Aikman’s name. “I rewatched the second half this morning before my kids headed off to school. I caught some of the commentary. But really, in this league, finding a way to win—however that happens—is significant.”
Throughout the “Monday Night Football” broadcast, Aikman expressed strong opinions about Williams, prompting many viewers to voice frustration about his pointed critiques.
One notable moment came when Williams connected with running back D’Andre Swift for a short pass that turned into a 55-yard touchdown. Aikman, however, dismissed it, calling the play “just a stroke of luck on Chicago’s part.”
Later in the game, Williams attempted a third-and-16 pass to Olamide Zaccheaus near the Bears’ end zone, but it was dropped. Aikman remarked, “It hit his shoulder pad.” Johnson must’ve thought it was an odd critique, especially since earlier in the quarter, Williams completed 6 of 9 passes for 56 yards while keeping a narrow 3-0 lead.
In total, Williams had a decent outing on Monday, completing 17 of 29 passes for 252 yards, with one touchdown and no interceptions. He also contributed with a rushing touchdown.
With just three minutes left in the game, Williams moved the Bears down the field for a 36-yard drive, setting up Jake Moody for the lead-taking field goal.
