Beer-loving shoplifter in NYC caught again after more than 200 arrests, but released quickly

A frequent shoplifter with over 200 arrests to his name, Laron Mack, 53, is in more trouble after allegedly taking several packs of Modelo beer from a Duane Reade Pharmacy in Lower Manhattan.

This incident was notable for a confrontation he had with photographer Stephen Hirsch, which echoed a previous altercation in 2022 when Mack damaged Hirsch’s camera. This week, after his arrest, Mack even attempted to kick Hirsch.

Authorities took Mack into custody on Wednesday for allegedly trying to take 18 packs of Modelo on Monday. He was released without bail, as the charges fall under a state law from 2019 that limits bail for certain offenses.

The Duane Reade location has become a frequent target for theft, having been hit multiple times since April for snacks and beer, which seems to be a favorite of Mack’s. A law enforcement source remarked, “This guy just steals it.” They believe his actions aren’t driven by need, as he doesn’t appear to steal food to feed anyone.

Mack currently has at least three theft cases awaiting resolution in Manhattan, including one involving a pharmacy robbery a day before this latest incident.

Recent reports indicate he attempted to take four 12-packs, 11 eight-packs, and two larger cans on June 9, as well as numerous other attempts stretching back to April. He’s even been reported stealing items like Charmin toilet paper and other goods from various stores across the city.

His history is quite extensive; during a prior arrest in June 2022, he admitted to stealing as a means of survival, stating, “I’ll steal for a living.” This has become almost a pattern for him, and despite his ongoing trouble with the law, state reforms prevent him from being detained for the time being.

After he was released, Hirsch approached Mack to ask how he was doing, only to have Mack respond aggressively—knocking the camera from Hirsch’s hands and shoving him against a wall.

Despite these incidents, it seems Mack continues to find ways to avoid serious repercussions under current laws.
