Ukrainian Delegation to Meet Russia in Istanbul
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Thursday that the country’s delegation will participate in talks with Russia in Istanbul, aiming to achieve a ceasefire.
Leading the Istanbul delegation is Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, accompanied by military and intelligence representatives.
A source from the Turkish Foreign Ministry, mentioned by the German news agency DPA, indicated that discussions between Ukrainian and Russian diplomats are set to take place in Istanbul today.
In a post on X, Zelenskyy noted: “Head of the President, Minister of Defense, Chief of General Staff, Head of Security Services in Ukraine, and representatives of all Intelligence Reporting Agencies.”
He pointed out that Turkey has welcomed them with a delegation of equivalent status, but he expressed concerns about the Russian delegation’s seriousness in engaging in meaningful consultations.
Despite his skepticism regarding Russia’s dedication to the negotiations, Zelensky insisted that Ukraine is participating to honor Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and expressing respect for President Donald Trump.
He added, “Yet, despite the low status of the Russian delegation, we chose to proceed with these talks to take a step towards de-escalation, showing respect for President Trump and the high-level delegation present in Turkey.” He also mentioned that they would not be sending their head of security services and chief of the general staff.
Zelenskyy further remarked that Russia seemed uninterested in serious discussions and “doesn’t want to end the war.”
“The mission of our delegation is clear. Ceasefires will be a priority. I doubt that Russia is earnest about these meetings or ending the conflict.”
