Joy Behar Questions Trump’s Legitimacy
During a recent episode of “The View,” co-host Joy Behar expressed her belief that President Donald Trump is not the legitimate president. She supported the decision of some Democrats to skip the State of the Union address.
However, co-hosts Sunny Hostin and Sarah Haines disagreed. They argued that Democrats should demonstrate civility by attending the address, regardless of Trump’s behavior. Hostin emphasized that, although Trump may not act civilly, Congress members should still fulfill their duty by being present.
Behar articulated her position by saying, “I oppose it because I don’t really think he is. In my lifetime—this includes Nixon and Reagan, whom I didn’t vote for—conservative Republicans wouldn’t act like this guy.” Hostin pressed her for clarification, noting that she wasn’t claiming that Behar was elected illegitimately, but rather that Trump’s election was questionable based on his actions.
Behar added, “He has no sense whatsoever about what he should do. The only way they can make their case is by not showing up.” In her remarks to reporters about House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries’s comment regarding Trump coming to “our home,” Behar suggested that Democrats should not allow anyone to push them out.
Behar further explained, “Sometimes to get your point across, you have to show that you don’t think that person deserves your presence.” Hostin interjected that, just because Trump is not civil, it does not mean that legislators should act inappropriately. Instead, they should show up and listen.
Many Democrats plan to attend a rally called the “People’s State of the Union” near the Lincoln Memorial, which will be organized by activist groups focused on critiquing Trump’s first year in office.
Interestingly, while some Democrats are willing to skip the address, a handful still plan to show up. Among them are Representatives Yasamin Ansari, Becca Balint, and others. On the other hand, a few Democratic politicians, like Senator Ruben Gallego and Representative Jared Golden, have opted not to attend either the address or any counter-events.
