Bowman Links Stress from Racism to Health Issues
On Wednesday, former Democratic Representative Jamal Bowman from New York suggested that the “stress” associated with racism is a contributing factor to various health problems in the Black community, including cancer and diabetes.
This statement comes in the wake of Bowman’s controversial actions when he pulled a fire alarm just before the House of Representatives was set to pass a temporary spending bill aimed at preventing a government shutdown on September 30, 2023. It was later revealed that he had misinterpreted guidance from the Congressional Ethics Bureau regarding the event. During a segment on “CNN Newsnight,” he also criticized former Trump administration official Mark Short, claiming that racism tends to be perpetuated by “consistent” Republicans.
Bowman stated, “We don’t confront the historical American sins and hatred toward Black and Brown individuals, as well as sexism and anti-LGBTQ sentiments against women. Damage is done by my Republican colleagues in this regard.”
He continued, raising his voice, “The reason why heart disease, cancer, obesity, and diabetes disproportionately affect the Black community is tied to the daily stress of facing racist remarks, whether directly or indirectly.”
Following the fire alarm incident, Bowman faced misdemeanor charges. He later shared details about the situation with fellow Democrats, discussing various Republicans in the House.
In the upcoming 2024 Democratic primary, Bowman lost to George Latimer of Westchester County in the race for the 16th Congressional District, partly due to his defense of pro-Hamas protesters who made inflammatory statements about Israel. He was one of nine Democrats who opposed a resolution in October 2023 that expressed support for Israel after recent attacks.
