Balogun Allowed to Play Despite Controversy
Folarin Balogun followed the instructions given to him, ultimately getting the chance to play soccer again. Just a day before the U.S. men’s national team faced Belgium in the Round of 16, FIFA announced that Balogun would be eligible, despite initially being set to miss the match due to a red card he received in the previous game.
This decision added fuel to an already heated debate, as many felt that the red card itself was unwarranted. Nevertheless, despite strong objections from Belgium and appeals regarding the situation, Balogun was cleared to participate.
In the end, it didn’t change the outcome much—the United States lost to Belgium, 4-1, which dashed their hopes of advancing in the World Cup. However, Balogun reached out to Belgium’s coach, Rudi Garcia, after the match, and Garcia expressed appreciation for their conversation.
“He came to talk to me, and I loved it. It’s not his fault. He’s not to blame. I told him that,” Garcia commented post-game, reflecting positively on Balogun’s initiative. “I really appreciate the intention of coming to see me. I’m grateful for this player.”
Furthermore, FIFA’s regulations allow for disciplinary measures to be suspended partially or completely, which was a key point highlighted in discussions about Balogun’s situation.
Trump reportedly contacted FIFA president Gianni Infantino, questioning the red card decision. “All I did was ask for a review because I didn’t think it was a foul,” he stated. “Again, I’m good at this. I thought it was just two great athletes colliding. It wasn’t anything malicious.”
“I think this is terrible… It would have been a huge stain to not allow our top player—the best player on the team—to play. The committee made the right choice,” he added, emphasizing his support for Balogun’s participation.
Despite such efforts from Trump, Belgium is set to compete against Spain next, while the U.S. team looks forward to a return in 2032.
