Team USA Exits the 2026 FIFA World Cup

Team USA’s journey in the 2026 FIFA World Cup has come to an end. They faced Belgium in Seattle, losing 4-1 in front of an enthusiastic crowd.

Belgium’s Charles de Quetelaere opened the scoring just nine minutes into the match, and later, his second goal in the 39th minute sparked frustration from Team USA’s coach, Mauricio Pochettino, who was seen kicking a water bottle in reaction.

Team USA’s equalizer came courtesy of Malik Tillman, who took a free kick that ricocheted off a Belgian defender and found the back of the net. It felt like a turning point in the game. But shortly after, Belgian attacks proved too much, with de Quetelaere scoring again right in front of the U.S. goalpost.

Things went further downhill when U.S. goalkeeper Matt Freese made a critical mistake in the second half. While trying to clear a ball, he stumbled, allowing Hans Vanaken to score easily. It was a moment that seemed to sum up the team’s defensive struggles throughout the match.

To complicate matters, Christian Pulisic, also known as “Captain America,” was forced to leave the game due to injury after colliding with a Belgian defender. This was a tough blow for the team, as he had been a pivotal player up to that point.

Another significant point was Folarin Balogun’s performance. Despite being available after a red card suspension, he wasn’t as impactful, failing to find opportunities to score.

As the game went on, the U.S. tried to push back, even coming close with some near misses, but Belgium held their ground, preventing any dramatic comebacks like the ones we’d seen earlier in the tournament.

The final nail in the coffin was a stoppage-time goal from Belgium’s Romelu Lukaku, sealing the game firmly in their favor.

While the Americans left the field dejected, Belgium celebrated their advancement to the quarterfinals, where they will take on Spain. The result certainly leaves Team USA with lessons to learn and hopes for future tournaments.
