Ben Affleck Defends AI Technology Amid Criticism
LOS ANGELES — Ben Affleck has expressed his frustration with the “propaganda” surrounding artificial intelligence, positioning himself as a strong advocate for this new technology in Hollywood.
Affleck attracted attention in July when it was revealed that Netflix acquired his AI startup, InterPositive, for an astonishing $587 million—a project that had largely flown under the radar in the industry.
During his appearance at the Bloomberg Screentime summit on Wednesday, he tackled the “cynical take” from critics who alleged that Netflix purchased his company to engage in “despicable things” with AI, suggesting they needed him as a reputable filmmaker to provide legitimacy.
Affleck countered this viewpoint, stating, “Well, that’s a very cynical view indeed,” emphasizing that Netflix is not in a position to mistreat artists, given their reliance on collaboration.
The Oscar winner described Netflix as “super judicious” with the projects he’s involved in, remarking on discussions with directors about how to utilize AI effectively. He shared that once filmmakers grasp the technology, it ceases to feel intimidating and instead becomes a valuable tool for creativity.
Affleck pointed out that AI should be viewed as a natural progression in technological advancements within the film industry. “It’s another form of computing that does tools and is a technological advancement that’s really in keeping with a long-standing series of technological improvements,” he noted.
He continued to elaborate, indicating that the application of AI is currently creating more job opportunities rather than less, and he feels that Netflix has remained true to its commitment to enhance the quality of their offerings as opposed to merely cutting costs.
The “Argo” director mentioned that he has utilized AI in numerous aspects of his upcoming Netflix film “Animals,” though he refrained from detailing specific uses, likening it to a magician revealing their tricks.
When asked about the potential impact of AI on the industry, Affleck dismissed fears of a technological takeover and instead expressed concerns about its effects on education and societal behaviors. “When I worry about AI, I worry about like my kids in school,” he remarked, outlining his concerns about rising grades in colleges and the notion of “learned helplessness.” He stated he doesn’t fear a “Skynet” scenario but sees AI as something that can add value.
Affleck concluded by mentioning the necessity for people to engage with AI technology, suggesting that like many innovations, becoming accustomed to it makes its limitations and capabilities clearer. “It needs to be incorporated,” he said, emphasizing the importance of familiarity with the technology to recognize its true nature.
