Shawn Levy explains how Jennifer Garner’s joke about Ben Affleck in Deadpool & Wolverine came about.
when “Happy Sad Confused” Podcast Host Josh Horowitz asked the director during Monday’s broadcast if he sought Affleck’s approval, but Levy denied it.
“No, I did consider it with Jen,” the 56-year-old explained about Garner joking about her ex-husband when she reprises her role as Elektra.
In last month’s Marvel movie, Ryan Reynolds’ character expresses condolences for the death of Elektra’s love interest, Daredevil, played by Affleck.
Garner, 52, simply shrugged and said, “I’m OK.”
“As far as I know, that joke has not been verified by Ben,” Levy acknowledged.
But, he said, “I spoke to Ben afterwards because… there’s a tribute reel to Marvel movie traditions in the end credits, and that gave everybody a chance to speak, because we needed and wanted everyone’s permission.”
Garner and Affleck, 51, met and fell in love while filming “Daredevil” in 2003.
The former couple married two years later and had three children together – Violet, 18, Seraphina, 15, and Samuel, 12 – before their divorce was finalized in 2018.
Affleck began dating Lopez in 2021, to whom he was engaged from 2002 to 2004.
The “Gigi” co-stars sparked divorce rumors in May and are currently separated, with sources telling Page Six on Monday that Lopez is “furious” and “humiliated.”
As for Garner’s love life, she has been in an on-and-off relationship with John Miller since 2018.
The former “Alias” actor took to Instagram on Monday to give a sneak peek at the rigorous training he underwent for his role in “Deadpool & Wolverine.”
“I was healthy, but @marvel wasn’t healthy,” Garner said. Captioned the video“My best friend and OG stunt double [and I] … Here I was spending my #SuperHeroSummer spinning rhinos in the backyard and laughing at my aching old body.”
In the footage, the “13 Going on 30” star can be seen boxing, lifting weights, jumping on a trampoline and twirling a sword.
