Ben Affleck Shares His Views on Deporting Illegal Immigrants and Calls It 'Xenophobia'

Ben Affleck Critiques Immigration Policy Supporters

Actor Ben Affleck recently spoke out against those advocating for the deportation of criminal illegal immigrants, a stance that has historically received bipartisan support. He argued that the backing for former President Donald Trump’s immigration policies is driven by “xenophobia.”

Affleck insisted that it is “totally false” to claim that Democrats have been neglecting the prosecution of illegal migrants accused of serious crimes like murder and rape.

On The Moment Podcast, where he was promoting his new Netflix film Animals, which addresses the challenges faced by illegal migrants in Los Angeles, Affleck reflected on America’s history of racism. He described the current wave of anti-immigrant feelings as a form of “scapegoating” and “xenophobia.”

He expressed that when discussions focus on migrant influxes, some people react in a dehumanizing manner, referring to them as “animals.” He stated, “You can’t look at this movie without confronting the fact that in times of economic hardship or when politicians seek voter support, it’s unfortunately common to scapegoat.” He added that xenophobia and anti-immigrant sentiment have a long-standing place in American history.

Affleck recounted his childhood in Boston, recalling sentiments that echoed discrimination against various immigrant groups. He explained how this sort of response complicates the immigration debate. He mentioned that even some Latinos supported certain anti-immigration policies, driven by a feeling of fairness related to obeying laws and respecting processes.

He argued that these sentiments are often leveraged by politicians, who provide oversimplified answers to complex issues, saying, “If you’re feeling unhappy or have problems, it’s easier to blame these people instead of addressing the system.”

Despite this, he expressed a sense of hope, noting that he believes most Americans do not equate all immigrants with criminality. However, he acknowledged that some people indeed feel that way, despite the fact that not everyone in the country views immigrants negatively.

Affleck persisted in his view, claiming that many reacted in shock to the enforcement of strict immigration policies. He pointed out that a significant number of Americans back the initiatives aimed at deporting illegal immigrants. He emphasized that it seems that only the most extreme leftists protest against these policies, reflecting what he perceives as a disconnect from reality.

He criticized the Democratic Party’s response to Trump’s deportation initiatives, contending that nobody desires criminals or rapists in society. Yet he stated that the narrative suggesting these individuals were previously overlooked is “totally false.”

During the interview, he seemed unaware that many states governed by Democrats have been criticized for failing to prosecute illegal migrants involved in serious crimes and often refuse to cooperate with federal immigration authorities for deportations.

Affleck characterized discussions about deporting illegal immigrants as merely “a veneer,” saying they mask deeper societal issues related to protecting one’s own interests at the expense of others. He concluded that these matters are far more nuanced than people acknowledge, urging a rejection of any notion that paints groups of people as inherently inferior or malevolent.
