Ben Johnson’s Halftime Exchange
Ben Johnson isn’t known for being difficult, but his demeanor looked a bit off during a Sunday game. CBS sideline reporter Adity Kinka Habwara had an interesting exchange with Johnson as he went into halftime against the Raiders. She was trying to get some insights, perhaps expecting a familiar response from him.
Johnson: “I press the reset button here at halftime. Go back and establish your identity later.”
Kinkhabwala: “So do you need to change what you’re doing?”
Johnson: “Do you think so? We’ll be fine.”
Johnson’s tone and the glare he shot at Kinkhabwala were noticeably different from what we might expect. It felt almost as if he believed his words shouldn’t be questioned, responding to what seemed like a straightforward inquiry about the game.
Later on, Johnson addressed the situation, apologizing for his behavior. He explained that he was in “game mode” and that the noise in the stadium contributed to his reaction.
This excuse makes a lot of sense; it seemed like he genuinely handled it well. Watching the video repeatedly, it’s clear that he might have missed the “so” at the beginning of Kinkhabwala’s question, which led to some misunderstanding.
At that moment in the game, the Bears were sitting at 1-2 for the season, raising questions about the team’s cohesion. Chicago had just fallen 14-9 to the Raiders, so one could understand if the pressure was getting to him.
This entire situation appears to have been blown out of proportion. While there are criticisms surrounding Kinkhabwala’s past remarks about coaches, it should be noted that Johnson doesn’t have a history of disrespect towards the media.
Neither Kinkhabwala nor CBS Sports commented on Johnson’s apology, but it’s worth noting that he took the initiative to acknowledge that his attitude was unwarranted.
