Ben Stiller Celebrates Knicks’ Championship Victory
After enduring a long streak of disappointment with the New York Knicks, Ben Stiller has finally found reason to celebrate as the team secures their first NBA Finals appearance since 1973.
Fans were thrilled when the Knicks clinched Game 5 with a close score of 94-90, earning their spot in the Finals. Stiller, a passionate supporter of the team, had not taken to social media to comment on the win as of early Sunday. However, he was later seen at Frostbank Center, donning a championship T-shirt and cap, while carrying goggles and a whiteboard belonging to Knicks coach Mike Brown.
Expressing his elation, Stiller told ESPN, “I’m the happiest I’ve ever felt. That’s amazing. Really amazing.” His joy marked a significant contrast to the years of frustration fans, including himself, have faced.
The actor’s connection to the Knicks dates back to the 1973-74 season, when his late father, Jerry Stiller, took him to games. That season also marked the beginning of a 53-year championship drought. Stiller’s support for the team re-ignited when he returned to New York from Los Angeles in 2010. Over those years, he admitted to experiencing a lot of pain associated with the team’s struggles. Yet, Saturday night’s emotions were refreshingly positive, a striking difference from the anguish he’d grown accustomed to.
Stiller has often reflected on the pessimism surrounding the Knicks, saying he’d lived with the mindset that “oh, the Knicks are never going to be successful.” Despite the long wait, when the final buzzer signaled the Knicks’ victory, he was there, eager to capture the moment for what is speculated to be a project related to the Knicks’ playoff run.
Amid some security challenges, he persisted in gaining access for footage. His dedication has been evident throughout the playoffs, as he’s been seen not just courtside but also navigating various arenas and attending press conferences.
Now, back in New York, the celebration continues for Stiller and the Knicks, with a victory parade scheduled for Thursday.
