Knicks considered LeBron James – a partnership is 'highly improbable'

Knicks Explore LeBron James, But Likely Too Late

The Knicks have shown interest in free agent LeBron James, as noted by his agent Rich Paul, but sources suggest that a deal is “very, very unlikely.”

Sources indicated that discussions between Paul and the Knicks were somewhat vague. Paul later discussed on his podcast how the Knicks’ appeal diminished after winning the title.

It seems that a Knicks-LeBron partnership isn’t feasible, despite feeling like a long-held dream.

“That’s difficult,” Paul stated on Netflix’s “Game Over” Podcast. “You don’t want to mess something up like that. The Knicks are in a good place… If they hadn’t won the title, it might have been a different story.”

LeBron, who averaged 21 points during his All-Star stint last season, could bring not just skill but also a lot of attention—perhaps even a farewell tour for one of basketball’s greatest.

The Knicks, aiming to avoid the second apron, can only extend a veteran minimum contract, as LeBron has made it clear he won’t be returning to the Lakers, seeking a fresh start instead.

Meanwhile, the Knicks are also on the hunt for a backup center, especially after Mitchell Robinson departed for the Celtics in free agency.

Regardless of the LeBron situation, a source emphasized that the Knicks’ core will remain intact for next season.

LeBron’s potential destinations seem to be narrowing down to the Cavaliers, Warriors, and Sixers.

Each of these teams presents distinct prospects. With the Warriors, he could earn more money while teaming up with Stephen Curry. Returning to the Cavs would provide a fitting conclusion to his journey. The Sixers boast star players like Jaylen Brown, Joel Embiid, and Tyrese Maxey, offering a chance to end their title drought.

As for the Knicks? Previously appealing reasons have faded since their championship win.
