Bengals Edge Steelers in Thrilling Icy Hot Bowl
The Icy Hot Bowl delivered quite the spectacle for NFL fans this year.
In a showdown of seasoned quarterbacks, it was 40-year-old Joe Flacco who managed to outshine 41-year-old Aaron Rodgers, leading the Bengals to a nail-biting 33-31 victory during Thursday Night Football in Cincinnati.
Flacco racked up an impressive 342 passing yards along with three touchdowns, marking his first win since being traded from the Browns to the Bengals.
Meanwhile, Rodgers posted 249 yards with four touchdowns but also threw two interceptions.
Flacco really stepped up during crucial moments, tossing for 163 yards and two touchdowns while trailing. Notably, his passer rating of 108.6 was his best since last season’s 121.3 against the Jaguars back in October.
The fourth quarter saw an intense finish as both teams piled on a combined 27 points. It seemed like the Steelers had the upper hand after Rodgers connected with tight end Pat Freiermuth for a stunning 68-yard touchdown, putting Pittsburgh ahead by a point.
But with 2 minutes and 21 seconds to go, the Bengals were far from done. Flacco found Tee Higgins for a significant 28-yard gain, bringing them right to the Steelers’ 7-yard line and prompting a timeout from Pittsburgh.
Higgins smartly went down instead of rushing for the end zone, which allowed the Bengals to drain more time off the clock.
Flacco managed to run the clock down with three consecutive kneel-downs, setting up kicker Evan McPherson for the game-winning field goal with just seven seconds remaining. Rodgers had a final chance to respond, completing one pass before attempting a Hail Mary, but was hit in the end zone, sealing the victory for the Bengals.
Interestingly, next generation statistics reveal that the ball traveled 69.8 air yards during that last pass, which represents Rodgers’ longest attempt since 2017.
All in all, the two veteran quarterbacks combined for a whopping 591 passing yards and six touchdowns, highlighting the excitement of the game.
