Cincinnati Bengals’ Struggles Continue
The Cincinnati Bengals’ defense seems to be struggling like never before, and it’s starting to wear on some teammates on the offensive side. Just recently, they managed to score 15 points in a mere two minutes, taking a 42-41 lead against the Bears with just 54 seconds remaining. It looked like they might pull off an improbable comeback.
However, in just four plays, the Bears turned things around and clinched the game with a surprising touchdown, ending it at 47-42.
“It’s unfortunate, but that’s the NFL,” said Bengals running back Chase Brown, shaken by the results. “Oh my god, oh my god.”
Cincinnati has dealt with defensive issues throughout the season, but it has become particularly evident in their last two games. Just last week, the defense allowed the winless Jets to seize a 39-38 victory after falling behind in the fourth quarter.
“We really need to play complementary football,” Brown expressed. “We scored, and we had the lead; we need to finish these games. That’s what we have to do.”
Superstar receiver Ja’Marr Chase also showed his frustration after the game, and he was visibly disappointed walking back to the locker room. When he reached the tunnel, he could be heard saying, “One stop.”
After trailing 41-27 in the fourth quarter, the Bengals’ offense rallied back, with Joe Flacco, who has been doing well since being traded to the Browns, leading two touchdown drives that put them ahead.
With less than a minute on the clock, the Bears covered 72 yards in four plays, capped off by a 58-yard touchdown pass to rookie tight end Colston Loveland.
Head coach Zac Taylor acknowledged the frustration building among his players. “We need to find a way to fix this. We’re working hard at it,” he stated post-game. “It’s not for lack of effort or work. We’re trying everything we can, but it’s tough.”
Unfortunately, these efforts haven’t translated into improvement. The Bengals’ defense currently places last in DVOA stats, and many observers argue it’s among the worst defenses in recent seasons.
From an EPA/Play (expected points per play) perspective, the defense ranks as one of the poorest in the last 25 years. They’ve now become the first team since 1966 to lose back-to-back games, scoring over 38 points in each matchup.
The situation worsened with elite pass rusher Trey Hendrickson sidelined due to injury, and middle linebacker and defensive captain Logan Wilson has even requested a trade amid his decreased role.
