On Wednesday, Bernhard Langer announced that 2024 will be his last appearance at Augusta National as a player.
The two-time Masters champion decided: make it official According to Golf Channel, ahead of the PGA Tour Champions season in Hawaii.
He will make his 41st career start at Augusta National this April. He made his debut on this historic course in 1982. Just three years later he won his green jacket for the first time in 1985. Eight years later he won his second Masters in 1993.
“It's exciting,” Langer said Wednesday. “At the same time, I know that when everyone else is hitting a 9-iron into the green, I'm going to be hitting a 3-iron and a 2-hybrid, and that's hard to compete with. It’s a challenge and I usually don’t shy away from a challenge.”
For the past two years, he failed to shoot below a 74 in those four rounds and missed the cut. In his past 17 starts at Augusta, Langer has just one top-20 finish.
Langer won his 46th U.S. Senior Open last year, making him the winningest player in Champions Tour history. The victory earned him a spot in the U.S. Open field at Pinehurst later this year, but this will likely be his last start in a major championship.
Most recently, he and his son Jason won their third PNC Championship and fifth overall with Team Langer last December.
Langer's full interview will be aired at 5 p.m. as Golf Channel plans to preview the 2024 Champions Tour season.
