Bernie Sanders criticizes Paramount, claims lawsuit settlement will give Trump more power to challenge the media

Sanders Criticizes Paramount’s Settlement with Trump

Senator Bernie Sanders from Vermont expressed strong discontent towards Paramount Global after the company settled a lawsuit initiated by former President Donald Trump. This lawsuit stemmed from Trump’s dissatisfaction with a “60 Minutes” interview featuring Kamala Harris.

Prior to the settlement, Sanders had appealed to Shari Redstone, Paramount’s controlling shareholder, urging her not to resolve what he termed “an assault on the First Amendment.” Nevertheless, the company opted for an expensive settlement that included eight-figure payments and revisions to editorial policy, which critics labeled as a shameful capitulation.

In his remarks, Sanders highlighted the dangers of this precedent: “Settling a baseless lawsuit from Trump over a report he disliked sets a perilous standard for both the First Amendment and government ethics.” He warned that this decision would only empower Trump to continue his attacks on the media, which he vilifies as “the enemy of the people.” According to Sanders, this represents a troubling time for journalism and democratic values.

As part of the settlement, Trump will receive $16 million upfront, which is intended to cover legal costs and his future contributions to either a presidential library or a charity of his choice.

Additionally, it’s been reported that Fox News Digital is reserving another allocation for mid-term numbers related to advertising or public service announcements favoring conservative causes. While Paramount’s leadership grapples with various challenges, a merger with SkyDance Media is anticipated to introduce new management.

Sanders pointed out that the Redstone family stands to gain $2.4 billion from a sale to SkyDance, but this funding is contingent on Trump’s approval. He suggested that the deal compromises press freedom, stating, “Today, the Redstones have further weakened independent journalism.”

Further criticizing Trump’s approach, Sanders added, “He’s actively dismantling our democracy and advancing authoritarianism, with billionaires prioritizing profits over democratic integrity.” He described this as fundamentally unacceptable.

Meanwhile, Sen. Ron Wyden utilized social media to accuse Trump of corruption, asserting that Paramount essentially bribed Trump for a merger approval. He warned that when Democrats regain control, federal investigations will be far-reaching, and state prosecutors should address executives who may be jeopardizing democratic principles.

In response to the outcry from Sanders and Wyden, Paramount defended its choice to settle, emphasizing business practicality: “Companies often choose to resolve lawsuits to prevent potential costly legal battles and negative impacts on their operations.”

Sources close to Trump dismissed the criticisms from liberal figures, suggesting they failed to understand business dynamics without heavy government interference. A spokesperson for Trump’s legal team celebrated the settlement as a significant win for the former president, stating, “This landmark deal represents another victory for Donald J. Trump and reinforces accountability against misinformation.” They expressed confidence in Trump’s commitment to making America great again, ensuring transparency for the American public.
