Senator Sanders Advocates for Government Shutdown Over Health Care Issues
Independent Senator Bernie Sanders interrupted a press conference by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, urging Democrats to maintain the government shutdown unless Republicans agree to their terms.
During the event on Wednesday, Sanders emphasized that any negotiations to reopen the government must incorporate an extension of Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits, which are scheduled to expire at year’s end.
He linked the recent election outcome to potential increases in health care costs for low-income families stemming from the expiration of these tax credits.
“What people want is for Democrats to stand up and keep fighting. I think part of the reason many have found success is because the public sees Democrats trying to safeguard health care for all Americans,” Sanders stated.
“While there’s talk of bipartisan talks, let’s be straightforward: passing a bill that extends ACA tax credits is good, but we need clear support from the Speaker of the House and a commitment from the President to sign it,” he added.
“Ultimately, we must succeed in protecting American health care. If a bill passes in the Senate with a majority, but doesn’t go anywhere after that, it’s just a hollow victory,” he continued.
Sanders also criticized Democratic leadership for failing to back New York Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani despite his victory in the party nomination.
“The party leadership didn’t back Mamdani in New York. I think there’s a realization growing that simply upholding the status quo—along with the inequalities in the nation—does not serve the American public,” he remarked.
Schumer, who was also present, took the opportunity to criticize Republicans while highlighting the Democrats’ recent electoral wins.
“Republicans felt the political repercussions last night,” Schumer asserted. “This should ring alarm bells for the Republican Party. Their costly policies are pushing them into trouble, and they have no one to blame but themselves. The message from the American people is loud and clear: it’s time for a change.”
“A month ago, during a meeting with Donald Trump, we made it clear what would happen if he didn’t collaborate with us on health care. I warned him that ignoring these issues would spell disaster for the country, and last night showed it’s time for the Republican Party to address these needs for the nation’s sake,” he added.
Republicans have expressed readiness to negotiate with Democrats on health care matters but have stated that this will only take place after the government reopens, leaving both sides at an impasse as the longest government shutdown in U.S. history continues.
