Beryl strengthens into first hurricane of 2024 Atlantic season. Here’s what you should know

Hurricane Beryl strengthened into a hurricane on Saturday, becoming the first hurricane of the 2024 Atlantic season. according to To Discussion From the National Hurricane Center (NHC).

“Beryl continues to strengthen rapidly and is now a hurricane,” the NHC said in a discussion of the Atlantic season’s first hurricane on Saturday night. “Satellite imagery shows an expanding thick central cloud, and recent microwave imagery shows a partial eyewall formation.”

Where will Hurricane Beryl go?

According to an NHC discussion on Saturday evening, Beryl is heading toward the Windward Islands, a group of Caribbean islands that includes St. Lucia, Grenada and Carriacou.

“Beryl is expected to become a dangerous major hurricane when it reaches the Windward Islands late Sunday night or Monday, packing destructive hurricane-force winds and a life-threatening storm surge,” the NHC said in a discussion. “Hurricane watches and warnings are in effect for most of the Windward Islands.”

According to the Public Health Service Recommendation On Saturday evening, the NHC issued hurricane warnings and watches for islands including Barbados, St. Lucia and Grenada. The warning also stated that the storm was located about 720 miles east-southeast of Barbados.

How strong is Hurricane Beryl?

The storm’s maximum sustained winds were 75 mph, the NHC said in a public advisory Saturday evening.

“Hurricane conditions are expected in the Hurricane Warning area beginning Sunday night,” the NHC said in its advisory. “Hurricane conditions are also possible in the Hurricane Watch area Sunday night or Monday morning. Destructive wind damage is expected where the eye of Beryl passes over portions of the Windward Islands.”

The Recommendation also states:[a] A life-threatening storm surge could cause water levels to rise up to 5 to 7 feet above normal tides in inland waters near Beryl’s landfall within the Hurricane Warning and Watch areas.

“Coastal areas will experience large and destructive waves accompanied by storm surges,” the warning continued.

As for rainfall, the NHC said in its advisory that the storm is “expected to produce rainfall totals of 3 to 6 inches across Barbados and the Windward Islands from Sunday night into Monday.”

“This rainfall may cause flooding in vulnerable areas,” the NHC continued.
