Discussion on U.S. Approach to Iran’s Nuclear Program

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has weighed in on the possibility of President Donald Trump initiating a second Operation Midnight Hammer against Iran. This consideration arises from Iran’s reluctance to engage in negotiations regarding its nuclear program.

Bessent appeared on “American Report” to discuss various topics including the U.S. economy, upcoming midterm elections, and the ongoing nuclear talks with Iran. He remarked, “The Iranians understand violence—whether in financial markets or military initiatives. We’ve been applying maximum pressure, and we intend to keep doing so.”

His comments followed a meeting between President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House, during which Bessent described their conversation as “very detailed.”

Military Action as an Option

In light of these events, a retired general suggested that military action against Iran might be the “best option” for Trump, considering the current circumstances as a “historic opportunity.”

Following their discussions, Trump stated on Truth Social that no definitive agreements had been reached with Netanyahu. He reiterated his commitment to pursuing negotiations with Iran, indicating that if a deal could be forged, it would be treated as a priority. However, he also noted, “If we can’t make progress, we’ll have to wait to see how things unfold… The last time Iran opted against a deal during Operation Midnight Hammer, they faced severe consequences.”

Increasing Pressure on Iran

The Trump administration has intensified its stance on Iran, urging compliance with U.S. demands to dismantle its nuclear and ballistic missile programs.

Back in January, Trump cautioned Iran against refusing to negotiate, emphasizing previous consequences. “Iran didn’t agree before, and then there was Operation Midnight Hammer, which was damaging for them. The next attack will be even worse—don’t let it happen again,” he warned on Truth Social.

Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has dismissed U.S. nuclear demands and ruled out negotiations concerning their ballistic missile program.

Ongoing Strategic Pressure

Bessent made it clear that Trump had issued a directive for maximum pressure on Iran since last March, including the imposition of sanctions, a strategy he believes is currently effective. He confirmed that Trump has instructed his administration to maintain this pressure on Iran.

When asked if military action similar to last summer’s Operation Midnight Hammer might be necessary, Bessent chose not to speculate but acknowledged that officials are preparing military assets and exploring various options. “The president and Secretary Hegseth are reallocating military resources to the region, and decisions are forthcoming,” he stated.

With regard to future negotiations, Bessent expressed optimism that Trump could achieve favorable terms following Iran’s setbacks during Operation Midnight Hammer. “He believes he can secure a better deal from Iran, but ultimately, that depends on their response,” he said.

Continued Financial Oversight

Bessent also highlighted potential actions at the Treasury Department to sustain pressure on Iran. He noted, “We’re monitoring the Iranian leadership and tracking the funds they’re moving globally. Should it be necessary, we are prepared to retrieve those funds for the Iranian people.”
