Backlash Over Imam’s Comments on Senator Graham’s Death
A Texas imam who was invited to offer a prayer in Congress is now facing severe criticism for a social media post celebrating the death of Senator Lindsey Graham. Omar Suleiman, director of the Yaqeen Islamic Institute near Dallas, expressed a wish for Graham’s “eternal ruin” due to his backing of Israel.
Representative Beth Van Duyne (R-Texas) plans to introduce a resolution to formally censure Suleiman on Wednesday. She remarked that Suleiman’s statement, made shortly after news of Graham’s passing, was utterly inappropriate. “Goodbye, Lindsey. May you live eternity among the ruins for your part in building the ruins in Gaza,” Suleiman had written.
Van Duyne, who represents Suleiman’s suburban Dallas district, emphasized the importance of Congress condemning such incendiary remarks, especially since Suleiman had previously delivered an opening prayer in the House, at the invitation of Democrats, in 2019.
“Is this really what you believe?” Van Duyne asked during an interview, questioning the morality of condemning a recently deceased senator to eternal damnation over political disagreements. Graham served in Congress for decades and was known for his strong advocacy for U.S. alliances, particularly with Israel and Ukraine.
Van Duyne is discussing the resolution with leadership and expects some Democratic support. The resolution also highlights Suleiman’s past controversial statements, including calls for violence against Israel and harsh criticism of Zionists.
“This type of behavior from those who claim to preach love needs to be condemned,” she stated. Van Duyne expressed concern that such hateful rhetoric is increasingly common among commentators and activists.
She criticized the dangerous normalization of calls for violence and noted that it’s troubling when religious leaders engage in such discourse. Van Duyne has long been vocal about her concerns regarding Islamic extremism and its incompatibility with American values.
In the context of Graham’s legacy, she recalled his spirit of debate and genuine disagreements, which were never filled with malice. The upcoming resolution pays tribute to Graham, who had supported Van Duyne in her congressional run.
