Tragic Incident on Chicago Train
UPLAND, Ind. – A 26-year-old woman, Bethany McGee, was attacked on a Chicago train by a man with a lengthy criminal history. Friends described her as “very soft-spoken” and “kind,” highlighting her intelligence and past achievements as an honor student.
McGee’s family is devastated as she fights for her life following severe burns from the heinous act. “I’m praying for them because I know they’re going through a tough time,” said a resident from her tight-knit Christian community.
On November 17, while riding the CTA Blue Line, McGee became the target of an assault by Marcus Reed, 50. Authorities reported that Reed, who has been arrested 72 times, poured gasoline on her and set her on fire.
Her former classmate shared that McGee was not only smart but also had a softer side. She was an avid reader and an honors student in her hometown of Upland, Indiana, which has a small population and is home to Taylor University.
Neighbors noted McGee’s upbringing in a loving family. “They are wonderful parents…as loving as can be,” one neighbor remarked, expressing the family’s need for privacy during this challenging time.
Reed has a troubling record, with 22 arrests since 2016 and a total of 53 charges dating back to 1993, resulting in nine felony convictions. Despite this, he was released on an aggravated battery charge by a Cook County judge just prior to the incident, which raised concerns among the public.
Following the attack, U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy criticized the judicial system for allowing repeat offenders like Reed to remain free, suggesting that had he been incarcerated, this tragedy might have been avoided. Reed is now facing federal charges related to the attack.
While some have pointed out his apparent mental health issues, others argue this does not excuse his actions. “It’s tragic and disturbing,” said a friend, recalling the rising concern about violent crime.
CCTV footage captured the moment Reed approached McGee, pouring liquid on her before igniting it. She managed to escape the train but collapsed on the platform, suffering critical injuries. She remains in serious condition as the investigation continues.
