California Theater Cancels Performance of Israeli Comedian
A theater in California has found itself in hot water after canceling a performance by an Israeli comedian, Guy Hochman. This decision was made after he refused to denounce Israel’s actions in Gaza.
The Fine Arts Theater in Beverly Hills abruptly canceled Hochman’s show over the weekend, citing his failure to issue a public statement disavowing support for what they described as “genocide, rape, starvation, and torture of Palestinian civilians.” However, the theater quickly changed its stance and issued an apology for enacting what some called a “litmus test” for artists.
Michael Hall, the theater’s president, acknowledged the error in a statement. “While we do not necessarily agree with the views of every performer in our theater, it was a mistake to require artists to make political or ideological statements as a condition of performing,” he said.
This incident isn’t the first for Hochman, who reportedly often faces protests during his shows in North America. A recent event in New York had to be canceled due to concerns for safety.
