Across the country, Americans are waking up to the fact that the health care system may be more interested in your wallet than in your care.
That's why special caution is needed when it comes to a serious diagnosis like cancer.
“These ridiculous cancer screening programs, designed to bring customers to medical centers, are diagnosing things that aren't cancer,” Dr. Pam Popper, an internationally recognized expert in nutrition, medicine and health and founder and executive director of Wellness Forum Health, told Liz Wheeler on “The Liz Wheeler Show.”
“In other words, DCIS is not cancer, it's a risk factor for breast cancer,” she continues. “There are a lot of people who are being treated for cancer because they have risk factors. That's good for the industry, but not so good for the patient.”
Although diet is a key component in cancer prevention and treatment, traditional oncologists don’t place much emphasis on it.
“If you think about it, the average adult puts tons of food into their body every year,” Popper said. “How can that not have an impact?”
“I was astonished by the idea that someone would come in and their doctor tells them they have cancer and then say, 'No, actually, it's a risk factor for cancer, but it's not actually cancer,'” Wheeler responded, adding:
“How will patients know? We are not trained as doctors so we don't know what tests are done,” she added.
Popper believes receiving a cancer diagnosis should be treated like any other medical service, and that you should always do your research and get a second opinion.
“Don't do anything until you have sat down and thought about it and started researching,” Popper explains. “Consumers have to take responsibility. I'm big on consumer rights and responsibility.”
“Everybody thinks, 'The government has to change. Someone has to solve this problem for me.' You have to start by solving it for yourself. And then start helping those around you,” she continues, noting that her philosophy on health has helped her.
“I'm 68 years old and I weigh the same as I did when I graduated high school,” Popper said. “I'm not taking any medication. There's nothing wrong with me.”
