“My line snaked all the way through the store. My first reaction was to tweet that B&H was the hottest club in town.”

Eclipse viewers risk long-term damage to their eyes by staring at the sun for just a few seconds, even during a partial solar eclipse. No wonder, then, that hundreds of people packed into Garment District stores.

“People seemed a little shocked. They had a guy with a big light-up cane commanding the line. We bumped into each other a few times. We still didn’t get our bearings. There was definitely some conflict as people pushed through the line,” Hurwitz said.

Many companies were supporting New Yorkers by handing out free solar eclipse glasses, but those options quickly disappeared as enthusiasm for viewing the rare event grew.

Liam Collins, who came to B&H to take photos, said, “As I was about to take the train home, I saw LIRR employees handing out glasses at Penn Station. It was the busiest,” he told the Post, saying it was geared up for the eclipse.

“People were fighting there. A friend of mine who works there said several people started assaulting each other to get the glasses.

“So I wouldn’t be surprised if people at the station said, ‘It’s too chaotic here.'” Go to B&H, two blocks away. ”

B&H was selling Paper Viewers for $1.29 a pair and Eclipse Sunglasses for $39.95. The retailer also had options for packs of 4 to 20 pairs.

When the 24-year-old found out B&H was selling them, he placed an order with the store, but as soon as he arrived, he realized the sacrifice he was about to make.

“That store was the busiest I’ve ever seen. To get in line, you already needed glasses. They were giving them out the minute you walked into the store,” he said. I did.

“There were big boxes and employees were handing them out, and the line snaked through the entire store. I waited in line for 51 minutes to buy glasses.”

DeCastro had to wait nearly an hour to receive his glass, but explained it was well worth it.

“I really hope it won’t be cloudy tomorrow. If we wait 51 minutes and don’t even see an eclipse tomorrow, we’ll be sad,” he said.

“The faces of the people who were walking through the stores and saw the crowds had expressions of indignation on them like, “How long is this going to take?” But this is the last day that will pass near this area in at least several decades. It’s food. So people seemed to find it valuable.”
