The Biden administration is pursuing amnesty for Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro and his top officials.

In exchange, Maduro would give up power.

The Wall Street Journal reported:

With overwhelming evidence emerging that Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro lost last month’s general election, the United States is moving forward with an unlikely attempt to pressure him to give up power in exchange for a pardon, according to people familiar with the matter.

The United States has discussed pardoning Maduro and his top aides, who are facing Justice Department indictments, according to three people familiar with the Biden administration discussions. One of the people said the United States is “doing everything it can” to remove Maduro from power before his term ends in January.

A second person familiar with the talks said the United States was prepared to guarantee it would not seek the extradition of anyone associated with the administration. In 2020, the United States offered a $15 million bounty for information leading to the arrest of Maduro on charges of conspiring with allies to ship large amounts of cocaine into the United States.

The meeting offers a glimmer of hope for Venezuela’s opposition, which has seen meticulous vote tallying show that little-known former diplomat Edmundo Gonzalez defeated President Maduro in a landslide victory in the July 28 election. Over the past two weeks, Maduro has bought time by jailing thousands of dissidents, maintaining the loyalty of the military and giving a Supreme Court made up of his handpicked allies the task of resolving the electoral impasse.

Voting data shows Edmundo Gonzalez won the election. Maduro refuses to give up power.

Semafor reported:

New voting data showed diplomat Edmundo Gonzalez won last month’s election, but Maduro’s government has since jailed thousands of dissidents, retained the backing of the military, and called on the pro-Maduro Supreme Court to resolve the election dispute, while the United Nations General Assembly has offered to arbitrate the results if Maduro invites third-party observers.
