The Biden administration will provide approximately $285 million in funding from the CHIPS for America program for digital twin development and research in the semiconductor industry, the Department of Commerce, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). announced on Monday.
The latest announcement regarding the Notification of Financing Opportunity is part of the United States’ push to expand domestic semiconductor production.
The funds will be used to establish and operate the CHIPS Manufacturing USA Institute, which focuses on digital twins for the semiconductor industry.
Digital twins can reside in the cloud, creating opportunities to accelerate innovation and reduce R&D costs. Emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence can also be leveraged to accelerate designs in chip development, the administration said in the announcement.
This new Manufacturing USA Institute will not only make America a leader in developing this new technology for the semiconductor industry, but will also enable the use of digital twins for future chip R&D and production advances. It also helps train American workers and researchers. ” Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo said in her statement.
NIST Director Laurie E. LoCascio said in a statement that digital twin technology will help “transform the semiconductor industry.”
“He is a great example of how CHIPS for America brings together research institutions and industry partners in public-private partnerships to enable the rapid adoption of innovations that will strengthen our nation’s competitiveness for decades to come.” added.
The CHIPS Manufacturing USA program will host a one-day hybrid meeting for funding application candidates next Thursday.
