Biden administration announces $623M for EV chargers, alternative fueling stations

The Biden administration announced Thursday it will issue $623 million in grants to fund 47 electric vehicle charging and other alternative vehicle fuel infrastructure projects.

The 47 funded projects will install approximately 7,500 new electric vehicle chargers. These chargers will be installed in 22 states and Puerto Rico.

The funding is part of a broader $2.5 billion grant program for electric vehicle charging infrastructure that is part of the bipartisan Infrastructure Act.

The funding will be split between 36 “community” projects that invest in charging and hydrogen fueling infrastructure in urban and rural areas, and 11 “corridor” projects on the road.

“This funding will make EV chargers more accessible, reliable, and convenient for American motorists, while also giving American workers the ability to manufacture, install, and install chargers,” Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said in a written statement. “We can create maintenance jobs.”

Many of the funded projects involve electric vehicle chargers, including projects in California, Maryland, and Arizona, but other types of fueling stations are also being funded.

In Texas, $70 million will be invested in hydrogen-powered filling stations for medium- and heavy-duty trucks.
